Beer and Pot (Not Peola Pottery)

An article in the Reynolds County Courier tells how State Water Patrol and Department of Conservation agents are placing two observers on the bluff south of Park's Bluff Campground with scopes and radios to watch for drugs and underage drinking in canoes going down the Black. When they see something that they think needs investigating they radio other agents that are on the river bank. Kind of a "speed" trap on the river.

The weekend of June 16-18 there were police officers on the banks. We were shocked that they actually had a gun on them.

I had heard that there were problems and the second smiley face where most of the 9 milers get out. I have never seen any problems or heard any. (I come down 3-4 times a year) But, a group of people that canoe from Park Bluffs said that the people that run Park Bluffs (bus drivers) say that there is always problems and that it is dangerous to be at the second smiley face. They also say there is a broken down van with bullet holes in it and that there was a body or two found in it within the last several years. Is there any truth to any of this? I always defend the area because I have never heard anything like this.

Sounds like urban (wilderness!) legends to me. Last guy to die because of a canoe bus was a great guy named "looney" that fell under a bus as it crossed the Mill Creek shoot about five years ago. "looney" had a drinking problem and hence the accident. But as a local I would only go on the river during the week and my favorite time would be May or Ocotber on a Wednesday, when you are the only one on the river.
