Another Record

This time it's the hummingbirds. In the last seven days we have used 32 pounds of sugar, that's a record. However, today we only mixed 8 quarts, so I think that a lot of the birds started south this morning. We'll know more in the next few days.

Lee, first of all thanks again for all the info u post here on the dec 14th event as well as other area info. Labor day weekend will mark my first return to black river country in nearly 20 years. most of my bunch i run with are between 45 and 50 and just as content to hang out in the river or take a lazy float on occasion. so i guess we got too old to climb on the rocks of the shut-ins or elephant rocks. i always reguarded the shut-ins as the best, bar none swimmin' holes in the state and still would if i were in my 20's or teens. anyway we have camped every labor day as well as memorial at the same place on the gasconade for around 20 years and feel the desire to once again return to black river country and check out the area in general as well as the effected areas by the dec 14th event. questions: is ameren allowing visitors to the upper reseviour or the lower reseviour? is a person allowed to hike up the scour? also how are the grocery stores in lesterville for supplying my group for a three or four day weekend for camping as we are heavy on the meat and potato side of our feeding habits. we are also are the type that likes to support the economy in the area where we camp so do we need to stop in farmington on the way down from st. louis area or is there a good grocery in town?

First, no one can get to the Upper Reservoir except Ameren's contractors. You can see the Lower Reservoir at the dam and observation pullout on Highway U. No one can walk on the scour, although I think in future years that may be possible. The grocery store in Lesterville burned a few years ago. There are a couple of places that have minimum provisions, but I would stop in Farmington or Ironton for my food. Think you will enjoy you visit and hope you stop by the pottery and say hello.

Lee, a visit to the pottery is a MUST! as much info as u have provided the general public with, that requires only the click of the mouse on my favorites list where i keep this site, would have taken the average joe such as myself hours to find, if i could have found all this previous info at all........lets just say i feel the need to introduce myself and shake your hand and extend a big thanks.......look forward to meeting you. Slim.

Lee, my group is wondering how the restaurant/snack/eatery scene around there is?

Plan on eating at the Black River Ice Cream Parlor. They are open Wed through Sunday for lunch and dinner, and serve breakfast on Sat and Sun. I eat there at least once a week and usually twice. Lee
